Watch this space: fines for pedestrians holding parking spots in Spain
Taking up two parking spaces instead of one also carries a hefty fine in Spain

Without putting too fine a point on things, parking in Spain can be a real pain in the middle of the summer, especially in beach-side resorts and popular tourist spots. It’s a common practice to have a have a passenger hop out and ‘hold’ a space if you have to drive around the block or reverse, but the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has recently warned that this is actually a finable offence.
According to the Road Safety Law, as long as there is a footpath, a pedestrian area or some other suitable space, people on foot simply should not be in the road, as this puts both themselves and other drivers at risk. For this reason, pedestrians “may not remain on the hard shoulder or on the road, not even waiting for a vehicle.”

So next time you are faced with a pedestrian hogging a parking space and refusing to move, you are fully within your rights to call the police, and the person standing in the spot will face a fine of 80 euros for refusing to leave the road.
Parking can land motorists in all kinds of hot water, and it’s all too common these days to see a cautious owner taking up two spots to protect his vehicle from dings and scrapes. An absolute nuisance for other road users, but also an offence that carries a fine of between 80 and 200 euros.
