WATCH: Two planes packed with tourists collide at Spanish airport
The wing of one aircraft snapped off when it crashed into another plane at Palma airport in Mallorca
Hundreds of tourists had a shaky start to their holiday on Tuesday September 19 when two packed planes smashed into each other on the taxiway of the Son Sant Joan airport in Mallorca. The incident occurred shortly after 9am when both aircraft were on the ground.
According to shocked passengers, a Condor jet covering the Palma-Frankfurt route was at a standstill on the tarmac, waiting for take-off, when an Air Europa plane arriving from Barcelona touched down and rammed into the back of the Condor.
Thankfully the Air Europa plane was taxiing slowly so the contact was slight, but passengers on board still report hearing a “loud noise as the plane braked before impact.” Both aircraft were damaged with debris scattered all over the runway and the domestic plane’s wing snapped off, but the pilot was able to nurse it to the terminal and all passengers disembarked safely.

However, according to airline sources, the plane will need “a bit of refurbishment”.
Likewise, no injuries were reported from the Condor.
One of the passengers on the Palma-Frankfurt flight said that there were no scenes of panic as the on board travellers waited patiently for instructions after the collision.
“Emergency teams immediately came to examine the plane and they asked us passengers to wait inside the cabin before being transferred by bus to the terminal,” he added.
The plane bound for Frankfurt was schedule to take off at 9.15am but was delayed until 10.30am while safety checks were completed. However, according to Aena, both the Palma-Frankfurt (Condor) and Palma-Barcelona (Air Euopa) flights were eventually cancelled.
A formal investigation into the frightening incident will now be carried out by the Civil Aviation Accident and Incident Investigation Commission (CIAIAC).
