Westminster Abbey organist booked to play in free Murcia Cathedral concert
The famous British musician will take part in the Murcia International Organ Series this November
The eighth edition of the Murcia International Organ Series starts this Thursday November 9 with the first of the five concerts that have been scheduled, four of which will be held in the Murcia Cathedral. All of the unmissable shows are completely free and this year, one of the most anticipated performances will be given by the world-renowned organist from Westminster Abbey.
The Murcia Cathedral concerts will take place on November 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 8.30pm while an additional show has been scheduled at Las Anas Church on November 28, also starting at 8.30pm.
Since 2015, the Association of Friends of the Organ of the Region of Murcia (AMAORM) has been organising an international series of organ concerts in the Cathedral of Murcia during the month of November, with the exception of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
From the very beginning, the organisers have sought the participation of organists of the highest level, including prominent figures at the national and international level.
This edition will feature performances by Matthew Jorysz, (England); Esteban Landart, organ professor at the Higher Center of Music of the Basque Country and the Bayonne Conservatory (France); Michael Utz, organist of Brauewlier Abbey (Germany); and Ana Belén García, organist of the Basilica of Santa María del Coro de San Sebastián.
Performers will have the honour of playing Murcia Cathedral’s iconic Merklin organ, which was designed by Alsatian Joseph Merklin and built in Brussels between 1855 and 1856 by the Merklin-Schütze firm. It was inaugurated on July 8, 1857 and is one of the finest examples of German and French design of that time.
