Wet and wild weekend: Spain weather forecast March 7-10
Large parts of Spain are braced for heavy rain, driving winds and a temperature drop
Weather warnings on Saturday March 9
After a few very unsettled and changeable days, the weather is set to ramp up again this weekend and several weather alerts have been issued across Spain as a series of Atlantic storms are predicted to bring widespread rain, snowfall and a sharp drop in temperatures starting from Thursday, according to the State Meteorology Agency (Aemet).
Thursday March 7
Rubén Del Campo, spokesperson for Aemet, warns of an "important change in weather" with heavy rains expected across the country, particularly in Galicia, the south of Castilla y León, the north of Extremadura and the west of Andalucía. These regions can expect strong, persistent rains, and possibly hail storms.
Temperatures will also take a hit as an "air mass of polar maritime origin" sweeps across the country, causing a marked thermal drop and lowering the snow level to 800-1,100 metres. However, the night will remain quite mild in most areas.
Yellow warnings for rain, snow or strong gusts of wind have been activated in several communities, including Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Galicia, Navarra, Basque Country and La Rioja.
Friday March 8
Friday will see the cold air mass move eastwards, resulting in a "sharp drop" in temperatures of up to 6 or 8ºC compared to the previous day's values. Provincial capitals like Ávila, Burgos and Cuenca in Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha will experience a chilly maximum temperature of just 8 or 9ºC, but the south will be far warmer, the mercury hitting or even exceeding 20ºC in the likes of Alicante and Murcia.
Heavy rains will continue to batter the west, especially Galicia and western Andalucia, with snowfall expected in the northern half of Spain, potentially reaching low-lying areas.
Saturday March 9
Saturday will be the "most adverse day" of the week, according to Del Campo, as a new Atlantic storm brings widespread rain, snowfall and intense winds. Multiple yellow and orange alerts have been issued, including warnings for rough seas in Murcia and the Valencian Community.
Daytime temperatures are unlikely to make it past the high teens in the majority of Spain.
Sunday March 10
The storm is expected to move northward on Sunday, leading to gradual atmospheric stabilisation across the country, although scattered rainfall may persist. The temperatures will finally begin to climb again, albeit only by a couple of degrees in most parts.
