ARCHIVED - What a steal: German tourists pose as hotel guests in Spain to blag free meals
The Palma Police are still looking for a second holidaymaker involved in the free food scam

The National Police in the popular holiday resort of Playa de Palma in Mallorca have arrested a 24-year-old German man and are on the hunt for his friend for scamming a well-known hotel out of two meals. The pair reportedly turned up to the island establishment for breakfast, claiming that they were staying at the hotel, and left without paying.
The brazen boys returned the same night, Sunday August 14, and enjoyed a lavish dinner, according to the Superior Headquarters of the Balearic Islands. At this point, hotel staff began to smell a rat and quickly established that the two men weren’t actually staying at their premises at all.

When a waiter presented their table with a bill for breakfast and dinner, one of the German tourists scarpered, leaving the second man scrambling to explain their behaviour. He admitted that they owed the hotel money but as he didn’t have any cash or cards, left his mobile phone with the waiter as security, promising to return later with the full payment.
However, the ‘customer’ retuned the next day without any money and quickly became aggressive towards staff when they refused to return his mobile, at which point the Police were called.
The young German man was arrested for the alleged crime of fraud, and officials are still on the look-out for his accomplice.
