ARCHIVED - WHO confirms that Omicron infects those who have recovered from Covid
The experts believe that it is better to cancel big events this festive season
At a press conference in Geneva on Monday December 20, the World Health Organisation (WHO) confirmed the worst fears of health professionals across the globe: there is now clear evidence that people who have been double jabbed or who have overcome coronavirus can still contract the Omicron variant, which is now known to circulate faster than previous strains.
Health experts believe Omicron could well be the dominant version of Covid by mid-January, and WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged governments to cancel mass celebrations over the Christmas period wherever possible. It is better to “celebrate life tomorrow”, he said, than to “celebrate today and mourn tomorrow.”
Worldwide, since the beginning of the pandemic, coronavirus has caused 5.5 million deaths and 272 million infections. The data show that the second year of the health crisis was worse than the first, and in the last 12 months, fatalities rose to 3.3 million, which exceeds the accumulated deaths from malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS.
The WHO went on to stress that the only way to stem the spread of infections is to end the vaccination inequality between nations, adding that the common goal should be that by the middle of next year, 70% of the population of each country has been vaccinated – a target that was originally set for the end of this year.
Omicron has taken scientists by surprise as it has long been believed that a more transmissible variant than Delta was not possible, and its emergence has served to underscore the point that “this virus is unpredictable”.
“We cannot predict the next variant, but surely [the virus] will continue to evolve and in the face of this, the only thing we can do is stop the transmission,” the WHO concluded.
