ARCHIVED - Why antigen tests are not sold in supermarkets in Spain
Spain has one of the highest prices for the Covid diagnostic tests in Europe
The high demand for antigen tests in Spain in the lead-up to Christmas far exceeded supply, which led to many pharmacies upping their prices to as much as 12 euros and others running out of the diagnostic tests completely. While President Sanchez has committed to regulating the price, many companies have argued that the diagnostic tests should be available in supermarkets, as this would help to keep the costs down.
In France, the larger supermarket chains offer over-the-counter antigen tests in a pack of five for 6.20 euros, while in Germany they can be purchased in Aldi and Lidl at the bargain price of 1.75 euros. Likewise in Portugal, they cost less than two euros in stores.
Thus far, the Spanish government has remained steadfast in its claim that only allowing pharmacies to sell the self-testing kits guarantees their reporting accuracy, and superstore Mercadona has confirmed that the legal status in Spain doesn’t allow supermarkets to stock the product.
Responding to a question posed by a Twitter user, Mercadona wrote:
“Good afternoon. In Portugal the legislation allows its sale in supermarkets while in Spain, the sale is exclusively authorised in Pharmacies, so we cannot offer you this product in our assortment. All the best.”
Buenas tardes. En Portugal la legislación permite su venta en supermercados mientras que en España, su venta se encuentra autorizada de forma exclusiva en Farmacias, por lo que no podemos ofrecerte este producto en nuestro Surtido. Un saludo.
