Will Smith to captain team in Marbella boat race this June
The Men In Black star will compete in the ‘Formula 1 of the Sea’ event in Puerto Banús, Malaga
Will Smith fans might be surprised to hear that the Hollywood star is into water sports, but the Fresh Prince himself is indeed setting sail for the Costa del Sol this June to take part in a boating competition which has been dubbed the ‘Formula 1 of the Sea’.
The E1 Puerto Banús GP race will take place in Marbella marina on June 1 and 2 and Will Smith has confirmed that he will be captaining one of the teams. He’ll be joined by experienced Spanish driver Lucas Ordóñez, who will be trading the asphalt for the open sea for the event.
The eclectic boat race will feature teams captained by internationally renowned personalities, such as the tennis player Rafa Nadal, the singer Marc Anthony, the F1 driver Sergio Pérez, the former footballer Didier Drogba, the former American football player Tom Brady and the record producer Steve Aoki.
Along with them, other Spanish pilots who will participate in the competition, such as Cris Lazarraga, for Nadal's team, who was runner-up in the jet ski world championships and is known for leading the movement for the inclusion of women in the world of motorboating. Also Dani Clos, participant and winner of a Formula Renault in Italy and one victory and nine podiums in the GP2 Series, who competes with Sergio Pérez’s team.
On Saturday June 1, the teams will compete in the qualifying races and both the semi-final and final will be held on Sunday, during part of which will the general public will have free access. The entire race will be held right in front of the port and organisers are expecting somewhere in the region of 8,000 spectators.
This entirely unique sporting event will be kicked off with a concert by Puerto Rican Marc Anthony at Oasisss Marbella Fest on May 31. Music fans can expect a few guest appearances as well as the competitors mark the official start of the E1 Puerto Banús GP.
