ARCHIVED - Winter finally arrives in Spain this weekend: weather forecast Jan 13-15
Cold, northwesterly winds will bring a drop in temperatures, rain and even snow to Spain
The prevailing anticyclonic weather, which has brought high temperatures and bright, sunny skies to most of Spain, will continue for the next couple of days, broken only by the passage of an Atlantic front through the northwest of the country that will leave abundant rainfall in Galicia.
However, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned of a significant change in the weather come Sunday January 15 when the first real winter storm will set in.
"The anticyclone will retreat towards the Atlantic and a corridor of cold and humid winds from the northwest will be created that will affect Spain, generating a winter environment," explains Rubén del Campo, spokesperson for Aemet.
Friday January 13
The weekend will get off to a settled start and Friday should be mostly clear or a little cloudy, with the exception of Galicia and the Cantabrian area, where a dull and wet day is forecast. Some showers are also expected in the Canary Islands.
Daytime temperatures will climb in the Balearic Islands and along the Mediterranean coast but it will be a little cooler in central Spain, the extreme south and in western Andalucia. The night will also be noticeably more chilly, with the thermometers dipping to just 6ºC in Alicante.
Weak morning frosts and fog banks can’t be ruled out, tending to clear towards the afternoon and variable, light winds will predominate.
Saturday January 14
Galicia will welcome another Atlantic front on Saturday with showers and occasional heavy rain that will eventually spread to western Cantabria and Castilla y León.
In the rest of the country and the Balearic archipelago, the anticyclonic weather will continue, with bright or slightly overcast skies expected, but the Canary Islands will dawn very cloudy, clearing in the afternoon.
The entire country will enjoy a warm day on Saturday, with the mercury climbing to the high-teens in most places and even reaching 21ºC in Murcia.
Sunday January 15
A corridor of icy winds will drag a mass of very cold air towards Spain on Sunday, bringing heavy rain to the north "and in the form of snow in the mountains, where the level can drop to about 800 meters during the second half of the day,” according to Aemet.
Temperatures will drop across the board, except on the Mediterranean coast, where the thermometers will continue to hover around 18 or 19ºC.
Rainfall cannot also be ruled out in the southern half of the Atlantic slope and in the northeast, but it is not expected or very unlikely in the rest of the Mediterranean area.
