ARCHIVED - Winter weather returns to Spain this weekend: weather forecast April 1-3
The arrival of arctic storm Ciril in Spain will drastically reduce temperatures
After a few days of reprieve, April has arrived bringing frigid temperatures and more wintery weather to most of Spain. A mass of arctic cold air, together with the anticyclone in the British Isles and a storm in northern Italy will create the perfect conditions for plummeting temperatures and even snowfall in many areas.
On Friday April 1, the newly-arrived storm Ciril will bring some rainfall, but these showers will mostly be confined to eastern Andalucía and Castilla-La Mancha, the Valencian Community and the far north of Spain.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued orange and yellow warnings in Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja for heavy snowfall, while Andalucía, the Balearic Islands, Valencia, Melilla, Aragon and Catalonia are on notice due to adverse coastal phenomena and/or wind.
Aemet has warned of the chance of “significant snowfall in the upper Ebro and the Pyrenees” on Saturday April 2, with cloudy skies and scattered showers predicted throughout the country. A strong northerly wind will hit, dragging temperatures down to well below normal for this time of year.
Saturday weather warnings:
- Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia on orange alert for wind
- Aragon, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Navarra and the Basque Country on orange alert for low temperatures
- Balearic Islands and Catalonia on alert for adverse coastal phenomena
On Sunday April 3, the temperatures will plummet well below zero in many areas, with the most notable drops forecast for the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains, although the cold will also be felt along the Mediterranean coast.
Sunday weather warnings:
- Andalucía, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Ceuta on yellow alert for coastal phenomena
- Aragon, Catalonia, Castilla y Leon and Navarra on yellow alert for low temperatures
