Winter whiplash arrives: Spain weather forecast November 20-23
Temperatures will plummet across Spain and many areas can expect frost, snow and strong winds
The summery weather we’ve been experiencing bids farewell this week as the first “winter whiplash” is due to set in, according to meteorologists, who have forecast a general drop in temperatures along with blustery winds, morning frosts and even snow this week.
Although an anticyclone, which usually heralds pleasant weather, will rise through the north Atlantic, a Mediterranean storm gathering from Monday will block it, resulting in “a corridor of cold winds from the north.”
This polar air mass will cause a very abrupt temperature drop, and most regions will see the mercury dip by 10 or 12°C in the middle of the day compared to last week.
Monday November 20
The transition into winter will gradually begin on Monday, particularly in northern Spain and the Balearic Islands, while the rest of the country will be generally overcast. This cloud cover will spread from the northwest to the southeast as the day goes on, although the showers will be confined to Catalonia.
Widespread fog is forecast in the extreme south early on with heavy morning mists in western Andalucia.
The temperatures will take a noticeable drop in most of the country, but it should remain mild in the Mediterranean.
Tuesday November 21
The weather will become much more unstable in the north and along the Mediterranean coasts, where the skies will be cloudy with a chance of rain, and snow is very likely in mountainous areas. These showers could become stormy later in the afternoon.
Morning fogs and mists may also form in the southwest.
The mercury will continue its decline across almost the entire country, with daytime temperatures falling below 20ºC in most regions, although the Canary Islands will still enjoy more summer-like heat.
Yellow weather alerts for strong winds have been issued in Aragón, Catalonia and the Valencian Community while warnings for adverse sea conditions remain active in the Balearic Islands.
Wednesday November 22
Mostly cloudy skies are expected in the north and inland on Wednesday with abundant morning rain in Cantabria and the Pyrenees. The south will also be largely overcast although there will be some sunny spells.
Daytime temperatures will plummet in Andalucía, northeast Spain and on the Canary and Balearic Islands although the thermometers could climb by a degree or two in the rest of the country. Widespread frosts are forecast in the mountain ranges.
Intense northern winds will blow throughout the country, placing Aragón the Balearic Islands and Catalonia on orange alert.
Thursday November 23
The weather should settle down considerably on Thursday but the skies will continue to be mostly cloudy with a slight chance of rain in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands.
Maximum temperatures will rise in northern Spain but drop everywhere else, as will the night-time temperatures, with frosts in the mountains.
The northern winds will continue to be blustery, especially in the Balearic Islands, although no weather warnings have been issued.
