ARCHIVED - Young man stripped and physically assaulted during homophobic attack in Madrid
Local groups have organised protests in the centre of Madrid against the spiralling numbers of hate crimes
Spain’s National Police are investigating a savage homophobic attack on a 20-year-old man that occurred in broad daylight last weekend in Madrid. The young victim reported that he was set upon by eight hooded assailants as he entered the doorway to his home in the Malasaña area of the city. The attackers cut the man’s lip before stripping him from the waist down and etching the homphobic epithet ‘maricón’ on his buttock with a knife.
Officers are checking the CCTV footage located at the building in an attempt to track down the attackers, who face charges for hate crimes if apprehended. Police are also exploring the option that the victim knew his tormenters in some way, since they were waiting for him when he arrived home. The Kifkif association has demanded that local politicians immediately address the upsurge of homophobic crimes in Madrid, and two groups have organised protests in the capital.
The Marika Madrid Movement has called a rally this Wednesday at 20:00 in Puerta del Sol against attacks on LGTBI people, and COGAM has arranged another for this Saturday at 19:00, also in Puerta del Sol, against the ‘spiral of aggressions’ that LGTBI people are suffering nationwide.
