ARCHIVED - Dry and unusually warm start to January 2023: Alicante weather outlook January 3-6
End of 2022 temperatures in Alicante province were 6ºC above the average maximum for December
Alicante bid farewell to 2022 with unusually high temperatures that exceeded 20ºC, figures that are well above the average recorded in recent years, according to the Climatology Laboratory of the University of Alicante.
Climatologist Jorge Olcina pointed out that "the temperatures at the end of the year for the last two years are between five and six degrees above the average top temperatures in December in Alicante".
In the last week of 2022, the average temperature reached 21.6ºC, which was only surpassed on three other occasions: in 2015, with 22.2ºC; in 2017 (23ºC); and in 2021 (23.9ºC).
These conditions are a far cry from the coldest farewells to the year in recent times, with the mercury dropping below 15 degrees in 2013.
"In the last 10 years there has been a trend towards a predominance of anticyclonic situations with maximum temperatures above average. This has a clearly positive effect on tourism activity in our province," added Olcina.
And these pleasant conditions will continue into the first week of 2023, with the mercury hovering in the high teens.
Tuesday January 3 will get off to a cloudy start with lower layers and mist likely in the afternoon further inland where light rainfall is also forecast. A northerly wind will feel light on the coast early on with intervals of greater intensity in the afternoon. Inland, a light variable wind will become easterly as the day progresses.
Alcoy: 6ºC to 16ºC
Alicante: 8ºC to 18ºC

Low cloud or clear skies will mark the start of Wednesday January 4 with possible mist and fog banks. It will feel colder at night as thermometers drop, although daytime temperatures will remain in the high teens, accompanied by a northeasterly wind on the coast and light variable wind inland.
