ARCHIVED - Dry Three Kings but wet weekend ahead: Spain weather outlook Jan 5-8
Saturday and Sunday will see persistent rainfall in most regions of Spain
People in Spain will turn out in their thousands to watch the annual Three Kings parades on Thursday January 5 and the good news is that an ongoing anticyclonic front means that the day will remain mostly dry across the country.
However, meteorologists at El Tiempo have warned that there could be "some light rain in the Strait or the west coast of Malaga."
If you are planning on watching the parade this evening it might be a good idea to wrap up though, as very little cloud cover, particularly in the Mediterranean area, will lead to a chilly night, with temperatures dropping to the low single digits in most places.
Three Kings Day on Friday January 6 is forecast to be another dry one in most of Spain although by nightfall, a few showers are expected in western Galicia. The day will be mild and bright but some locally persistent fog is predicted for Extremadura which could spread to south later in the afternoon.
Temperatures will decrease in the north but remain largely unchanged elsewhere, hovering just under 20ºC in Malaga and Murcia, and hitting a spring-like 22ºC in parts of the Canary Islands.
After a few record-breaking warm and sunny days at the beginning of the year the weekend will mark a sudden change in the weather, as widespread rain is set to hit practically all of Spain. It will also feel rather muggy over the next couple of days with temperatures remaining warm in the south.
Beginning on Saturday January 7, the first real rains of 2023 will likely start strong in the north before rapidly spreading to the west during the afternoon. Later in the day and leading into the night the wet weather will reach most of the country, with the exception of eastern areas like Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia.
The showers will continue on Sunday January 8, with persistent rainfall forecast in Cádiz and Málaga. The Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and the Region of Murcia will be the only areas to escape the downpour. The thermometers will remain in the high teens or low 20s for the most part, and nighttime temperatures will also jump up a couple of degrees in most places.
