It’s not every day that baggage control stumbles upon something truly eye-popping, but officers at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport certainly got more than they bargained for during a recent routine luggage inspection.
A 63-year-old passenger travelling from the Dominican Republic via Madrid was arrested after her suitcase was found to contain nearly 20,000 sildenafil citrate pills – a medication better known for its “performance-enhancing” properties.
While most travellers pack a toothbrush and maybe a spare jumper, this woman appeared to have a more ambitious itinerary. The stash of little blue pills weighing down her suitcase was revealed during an X-ray scan, prompting officers to investigate further.
The Tax and Border Analysis and Investigation Unit (UDAIFF) quickly discovered that the passenger had neither a prescription nor any documentation to explain her pharmaceutical windfall.
With nearly 20,000 tablets to her name, she wasn’t likely stocking up for a romantic getaway. The Guardia Civil promptly arrested her on suspicion of crimes against public health and smuggling.
The seized pills were sent to the Pharmaceutical Inspection Services of Alicante to determine if they were counterfeit or had been tampered with.
Meanwhile, the 63-year-old was released by Elche Duty Court with precautionary measures. Authorities have taken the opportunity to remind travellers of the importance of following regulations when carrying medication.
Those jetting off with prescription drugs are advised to bring the corresponding medical documentation and stick to quantities that make sense for personal use.
