ARCHIVED - 80-year-old swimmer saved on Mazarron beach
The elderly victim suffered immersion syndrome on La Pava beach

Lifeguards from the Copla Plan had a busy weekend in the Region of Murcia and saved the life of an 80-year-old woman who suffered from immersion syndrome on La Pava beach in Puerto de Mazarrón on Sunday August 14.
Once she was pulled from the water the lifeguards requested the urgent dispatch of an ambulance and emergency personnel as the victim had swallowed a lot of water and was having trouble breathing.
The woman was transferred to the Puerto de Mazarrón health centre where doctors decided she would be better treated at the Virgen de la Arrixaca University Clinical Hospital in Murcia. A short time later, she was moved by an ambulance from the Mazarrón Red Cross, by which time she had regained consciousness.
Sadly, a far more tragic outcome was reported on the same day at Punta Brava beach in Cartagena, when a 78-year-old man drowned despite the immediate intervention of lifeguards and paramedics. Earlier in the week, four people, a man, woman and two children, were rescued from the sea in Cala de Mijo beach in Aguilas after running into difficulty. The 39-year-old man was treated by health workers at the beach but the two 6-year-old boys had to be taken to the Rafael Mendez de Lorca hospital.
