ARCHIVED - 83-year-old foreigner critical after almost drowning in Ibiza
The elderly man was swimming in the popular Spanish resort of San Antoni when he ran into difficulty
An 83-year-old man, of foreign nationality but living in Ibiza, ran into difficulties and managed to call for help while swimming in Cala Salada, Sant Antoni at 10.40am on Monday morning, June 13.
Lifeguards who were on duty on the beach pulled the octogenarian from the water but he quickly went into cardiorespiratory arrest. The first responders carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while waiting for the ambulance to arrive and after seven minutes, the man’s pulse returned.
He has been transferred to the intensive care unit of Can Misses hospital in a critical condition.
The previous day, a 33-year-old tourist was rushed to a Sant Antoni hospital after jumping from a 5-metre-high cliff on Cala Salada and landing on the rocks below. He remains in a critical condition with suspected spinal injuries.
And last week, an 82-year-old man was pulled from the sea on the same Ibiza beach; lifeguards performed CPR and applied a defibrillator and saved the victim’s life.
