ARCHIVED - A very Spanish scandal: the businessmen who used fake PPE contracts to buy Lamborghinis
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The socialites reportedly swindled several million euros by providing dodgy Covid tests and sanitary equipment
The names of Luis Medina and Alberto Luceño, hitherto unheard-of businessmen, jumped onto the front pages in Spain last week after it came to light that they had swindled more than 6 million euros out of Madrid City Council by supplying faulty PPE at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.
Posing as reputable suppliers of medical and sanitary equipment, the fraudsters provided gloves that barely came to the wrist and of the 250,000 tests they delivered, only 75,000 of them had an acceptable sensitivity level. Between them, the pair charged more than 148% the proper retail value of the dodgy gear.
On top of putting countless people at risk at the worst point of the health crisis, the scammer’s luxury lifestyle has caused the most outrage; the court heard that the two purchased high-end Lamborghinis, properties and even a yacht with their ill-gotten gains, and spent a week in a luxury Marbella hotel that charges 6,000 euros a night.
41-year-old Luis Medina is actually the son of the late Duke of Feria and the Sevillian grew up in one of the most important aristocratic families in Spain, the Medinaceli.
Alberto Luceño, meanwhile, was vice president of the Spanish Business Association (AEEN). Ironically, during his trial the prosecutors referred to a video on social media in which the businessman professed to be “moved by the desire to collaborate in the fight against the pandemic”.
And it’s not just the people of Madrid the fraudsters swindled. According to official sources, Luceño actually cheated his buddy Medina out of some 5.1 million euros which he hid in a private account and later used to purchase a 1.1 million euro home and a Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spider for 299,999 euros.
The pair now face crimes of aggravated fraud, documentation falsification and money laundering.
