Adios Mercadona: German supermarket chain takes over in Spain
Discount superstore Aldi plans to open 50 new supermarkets in Spain by the end of 2024
German discount giant Aldi is determined to lead the retail market in Spain and take the top spot from enduring favourite Mercadona. The chain has announced the opening of 50 brand-new stores across the country this year, almost the same number it launched during 2023.
This grand expansion in Spain began back in 2020 and will continue for many years to come, according to Aldi, which only last December opened the doors of ten stores and a modern distribution centre in the Valencian city of Sagunt.
Aldi’s expansion plan
Aldi plans to solidify its presence in the Canary Islands and northern regions of Spain, including the Basque Country, Galicia, Cantabria, and Castilla y León. Additionally, the discount supermarket chain aims to enhance its presence in areas that have contributed significantly to its growth in the domestic market, such as Andalucía, Madrid, the Valencian Community, and Catalonia.
These regions will account for the majority of new store openings this year.
Moreover, Aldi intends to reinforce its expansion in Extremadura, the Region of Murcia, and the Balearic Islands. To bolster its logistics capabilities, the company will inaugurate a state-of-the-art distribution centre in Miranda del Ebro (Burgos province) during the first half of the year. Spanning over 40,000 square metres, this facility will serve as a vital hub for supplying stores across northern Spain, while the new Sagunt distribution centre will become fully operational by early February.
Valentín Lumbreras, CEO of Aldi in Spain, highlighted "Aldi's commitment to growth in Spain and to offering families a quality, simple shopping option at the best possible price."
In 2023, the company accelerated its growth pace, launching 46 new supermarkets, with 10 of them debuting in December alone. This impressive rate of store openings has enabled Aldi to maintain its position as the leading player in the food and distribution sector, with the most number of new store openings since 2019.
As a result, Aldi ended 2023 with an extensive network of 435 supermarkets across Spain, boasting a total sales area of 480,000 square metres – an 11% increase compared to the previous year.
