Aldi opens 10 new supermarkets in Spain
The discount retailer will launch new supermarkets in holiday hotspots like Mallorca and Granada this month
German discount supermarket chain Aldi has delighted British expats with news that it will open no fewer than 10 new stores across Spain in December. Building on its already prominent presence in the country, the retailer will add shops to the bustling tourism hotspots of Madrid, Andalucia and Catalonia, as well as the Canary and Balearic Islands.
With these additions, Aldi will have launched a whopping 50 supermarkets in Spain during 2023.
This month, new bargain stores will spring up in the municipalities of San Bartolomé (Lanzarote) and Ciutadella (Menorca). Aldi will also add three more shops in Granada, two more in Barcelona and another in Deltebre (Tarragona). These are in addition to the ones which have already opened in Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid), on December 1, and Albox (Almería), on Monday December 4.
In total, during the last three years Aldi has opened close to 100 new stores throughout the country, with a rate of almost 40 annual launches in 2021 and 2022. With the openings in December, the company expects to close 2023 with more than 430 supermarkets in Spain.
Andalucia is by far the most popular region in Spain for Aldi supermarkets and with the latest additions, the community now boasts a total of 100 stores.
According to the company, the key to Aldi’s success in Spain is its commitment to offering customers high-quality and varied products at affordable prices.
To achieve this, the chain periodically reviews its products and processes and maintains long-term, trusted relationships with a small number of local suppliers. All of this allows Aldi to mix and match between its own brand and Spanish-made items, which is complemented by weekly and biweekly promotions on basic and fresh products.
