ARCHIVED - Aguilas plans to boost its sustainability and tourism with a new project worth 4.2m euros
The Murcia town has presented its project proposal to the EU for funds to promote sustainability in tourism
The European Union has put out a call for project proposals to develop sustainable tourist destinations, awarding a total of 720 million euros to the winning projects, and one town in particular in Murcia is hoping to capitalise on this grant.
The Town Council of Águilas has drawn up a Plan for Sustainability in Tourist Destinations worth 4,267,000 euros, which has been officially presented to the call for projects which was launched by the Government of Spain in conjunction with the European recovery funds Next Generation EU.
Town Mayor, Mari Carmen Moreno, has said that “The aim of these plans is to improve the destination, turning our town into a reference point for tourism based on sustainability.”
The final project, which has been presented to the national Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, is called PSTD Discover Águilas and revolves around four components – green transition and sustainability; energy efficiency; digital transition; and competitiveness – through which the town intends to enhance its attractiveness to tourists:
- The first part of the plan, which includes green and sustainable transition actions, involves, among other things, projects for the sustainable renovation of buildings, the creation of shaded areas in tourist areas, proposals for a circular economy in public services and recovery of the landscape.
- In terms of energy efficiency, the plan includes several proposals aimed at mitigating the town’s carbon footprint by using renewable energy sources, as well as measures to improve sustainable mobility.
- With regard to the digital transition, the town is making a commitment to implement and ecosystem of digital tourism and to optimise the tourist experience through the use of technology.
- Finally, Águilas has vowed to undertake actions in the field of competitiveness, focusing especially on a commitment to support the creation of new tourist offerings in coordination with businessmen and entrepreneurs, as well as the creation of new areas for active tourism, the development of marine and land routes for sports in nature, actions to improve the cycle path and the creation of a modern tourist information office. This also involves improving digital and experiential accessibility for tourist activities in the town, making them more inclusive every day.
