ARCHIVED - Alhama police rescue three dogs from drowning in irrigation canal
The animals were clearly exhausted when one officer dived into the Alhama canal to save them

Local Police in Alhama de Murcia are being celebrated this week for their heroic efforts in saving three dogs that had become trapped in an irrigation pool. A passerby notified the authorities on Tuesday March 21 that the animals had somehow made their way into the canal and were struggling to stay afloat in the water.
A patrol rushed to the scene and found the exhausted dogs barely clinging to branches, unable to climb out of the water due to the steepness of the sides of the canal. The officers requested backup from the fire prevention and rescue service, who are better equipped to deal with this kind of operation but, seeing that the animals were close to losing their grip, the agents jumped into action.
One of the officers descended into the canal with a rope tied around his waist and managed to prevent the weakest of the three dogs from drowning. Moments later, a second Local Police patrol arrived and helped the officer lift the other two animals to safety.
Right on time, the requested rescue vehicle landed at the scene and had to resuscitate one of the animals, who was later transferred in a stable condition to a veterinary clinic. Thanks to the quick thinking of the officers involved, all three pooches survived their terrifying ordeal.
Sadly, none of the dogs had identity chips so their owner was never tracked down.
Unfortunately, two of the animals managed to escape but in a true ‘tail’ with a happy ending, one of the lucky dogs was later adopted by a fireman who helped to rescue him.
