ARCHIVED - Alicante halts collection of humanitarian aid for Ukraine
The Valencia Government has asked that "no more donations are collected" for the moment
A week after a major logistics centre for Ukraine donations was opened in Alicante, along with three smaller collection points in the city, those responsible for humanitarian aid in the conflict zones have asked the Valencia Government "not to collect any more material" for the moment.
"The responsible authorities and organisations coordinating the emergency in the areas affected by the Russian invasion have requested that no more material be collected at this time. They have expressed their gratitude for the great solidarity shown and ask that the same commitment be maintained for other needs that may arise during the course of this conflict," said Alicante City Council in a statement.
Last week, the three municipal centres in Alicante collected tonnes of packaged food, blankets, medical supplies and clothing which on Monday March 14 were transferred to the logistics centre for receiving aid set up by the regional government in Ciudad de la Luz.
The City Council will transport the remaining donations collected over the last couple of days to the same facility and, if there's no room in the "now overcrowded logistics centre", it will be given to the NGOs already working in Alicante to help the Ukrainian people.
Meanwhile, the council has reinforced its Office of Attention to Migrants, Pangea, and hired two Ukrainian translators to assist refugees arriving in Alicante at a cost of 18,000 euros.
