ARCHIVED - Alicante public pool closed after 10 people are treated for chemical poisoning
Callosa de Segura municipal pool in the Vega Baja area of Alicante province was closed to the public on Sunday afternoon, August 28

At least 10 people suffered chemical poisoning after inhaling toxic fumes at a municipal swimming pool in Callosa de Segura on Sunday afternoon, forcing the Town Hall to close the public facility.
According to the Local Police, the poisonous gases originated from a "maintenance failure" in the pump room.
Emergency services were first alerted to two children displaying symptoms of a "chemical reaction" and a SAMU ambulance and a Basic Life Support ambulance were dispatched.
Once on the scene, medics discovered at least eight other sick people, the most severely affected being a member of staff at the municipal facility who was taken to hospital and discharged later on Sunday afternoon. The others were treated for "mild symptoms of intoxication due to fumes from the pool machinery".
Town Hall sources claim the incident was due to a "failure in the maintenance process" and have insisted that, despite the evacuation of the pool and treatment of 10 people, "the incident was minor". The council is now looking into how to compensate those affected.
Among the options being considered are a cash refund of the entrance fee or the possibility of exchanging the ticket on another day, according to a statement on the Town Hall's social networks.
Moisés Garri, Councillor for Sports in Callosa de Segura, said on Sunday evening that "following a scare" the pool will reopen at 11am on Monday August 29, and assured that "the people who were affected are fine".
The councillor thanked the "pool crew for their quick response", and emergency services for their collaboration.
