ARCHIVED - Almost 600 common medications in short supply in Spain
Spain is running out of everything from cough syrups to anxiety medication
Spain is in the unfortunate situation of moving from one crisis to another; just as the country seems on the cusp of overcoming the pandemic, a winter supply shortage is looming that threatens stocks of everything from beer to diesel.
Now, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has updated its data to show that some 570 different medications have become scarce, many of which are very common over-the-counter drugs. However, rather than being yet another symptom of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, medication shortages are actually pretty common, and usually arise when “the available units of a drug in the pharmaceutical channel are less than the national consumption needs”.
Normally, this happens due to problems in the drug manufacturing and distribution chain.
Among the commonly used drugs in short supply are: Trankimazin 2mg in boxes of 50 tablets, Omeprazol Serraclinica 40mg powder for solution for infusion EFG, Ritonavir Accord 100mg in film-coated tablets EFG, the 250ml bottle of Mucosan 6mg syrup, Enalapril/Hydrochlorothiazide Mylan 20/12.5mg in EFG tablets, Naproxen sodium Kern Pharma 550mg in film-coated tablets EFG and Ciprofloxacin Kern Pharma 2mg/ml in solution for infusion EFG in 100ml bottles.
In addition, AEMPS withdrew a common blood pressure medication from circulation recently due to irregularities in the batch.
The most important point to note is there are usually alternative drugs available containing the same active ingredients, so patients don’t have to interrupt their treatment in the case of a medication shortage. When this isn’t possible, strategies are put in place such as the exceptional sale of drugs with a recent expiration date or the controlled distribution of medication available by the manufacturer.
Since 2008, Aemps has been keeping a detailed list of all medicines that are in short supply which can be found on the agency’s website.
