Amazon Spain workers go on strike during Black Friday and Cyber Monday campaign
The online retailer has been accused of paying its staff in Spain a minimum wage while demanding a “maximum” performance
Unions have called a strike at Amazon bases throughout Spain over the busiest shopping days of the year, on November 27 and 28, which will badly effect Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Although Black Friday falls on November 24, a huge number of online purchases are processed, packaged and shipped over the following couple of days, and Monday 27 is also a very busy day for shoppers. Consumers can now expect delays with their deliveries as staff at every Amazon centre in Spain will down tools for an hour per shift.
The CCOO union claims that the industrial action is to protest the “insufficient protection of occupational health suffered by the workforce and salaries that do not recognise the responsibilities and demands set by the company.”
“Amazon pays the minimum wages of the sector of each province. This is neither a correct decision nor is it fair,” a union spokesperson said.
“Although the company gives us improvements, in no case does it compensate for what it demands of us every day. We must remind them that the regulations contemplate minimum work conditions, but Amazon requires us to give the maximum and not the minimum,” he added.
The retail giant has been quick to assure that its employees work in a “modern and safe” environment and that their salaries are “competitive,” with workers earning “at least 1,400 euros per month and with opportunities to grow and develop their careers”.
In a similar vein, some 200 staff working at H&M Customer Services offices in Spain will shut up shop on November 24. Employees of the Swedish fashion retailer are asking for higher salaries and better working conditions.
