ARCHIVED - Andalucia taxi drivers vote to strike for the whole weekend
Cab drivers will be on strike throughout Andalucia between September 23 and 26

Following a protest in Seville yesterday, the three taxi driver associations in the Andalucia region have voted unanimously to strike between 7pm on Friday September 23 and 7am on Monday September 26.
Drivers already downed tools in Malaga on September 22, albeit only for a couple of hours, leaving the airport, port, bus and train stations without cab services. Only 50% of the fleet was available for normal street pick-ups, which were confined to the elderly, disabled and families with small children.
The taxis are launching the industrial action in protest of the new degree law being prepared by the regional government which aims to regulate the activity of Transport Vehicles with Drivers (VTC). The new rules mean that so-called ride-hailing companies like Uber and Cabify will be allowed to operate on Andalucia’s streets from October 1, in direct competition with local taxi drivers.
Sources from Elite Taxi Sevilla explained that the three-day strike action is as a result of a “dialogue with the deaf” since the regional government refusing to listen to the concerns of drivers, who maintain that the new regulations aren’t restrictive enough.
“The worst affected by this strike are not the taxi drivers but the clientele, who will see first-hand the effects of not having this public service,” Pedro López, an Elite associate, pointed out.
The demonstration in Seville yesterday is the third protest organised by Andalusian taxi drivers this month, although union members claim that their efforts at negotiation have resulted in “zero progress.”
