ARCHIVED - Andalucia union calls for abuse victim support dogs to have same rights as guide dogs
The workers' union has teamed up with Pepos Andalucía Association which offers specially trained dogs to victims of abuse for support and protection
The Comisiones Obreras union (CCOO) and the Pepos Andalucía Association are calling on local and provincial authorities to give the same legal recognition to emotional support dogs for victims of gender violence and domestic violence as guide and other assistance dogs.
This non-profit association was formed by volunteers to offer victims of abuse specially trained escort dogs to offer protection, support and improve self-esteem.
The organisation has now teamed up with the union to push for these animals to be recognised as assistance dogs so that they can accompany women at all times.
Currently, whilst guide dogs can access public spaces and establishments, emotional support dogs cannot.
Clara Castarnado, head of Women's Affairs at CCOO Granada, stressed that this type of action represents another way to fight against gender violence in addition to the work carried out on a daily basis to improve the rights and protection of victims.
"It is so importance to dedicate resources to this type of prevention program and comprehensive care for victims of gender violence and, together with Pepos Andalucía, we will put pressure at local and provincial level to ensure that these emotional support dogs are considered as assistance animals, a way of ensuring that they can always be with their owners," she added.
