ARCHIVED - Another municipality in the Region of Murcia cracks down on electric scooters
Cartagena has followed Lorca’s lead and is going to implement new rules for electric scooter users
A law to regulate personal mobility vehicles like electric scooters has been approved in the municipality of Cartagena and the new rules are expected to come into effect before the new year.
The law prohibits scooter drivers from using headphones, earphones and mobile phones, and they will also be subject to alcohol and drug tests. The minimum age to use these motorised vehicles, which include electric bicycles and scooters, will be fixed at 15 years old, while the maximum speed limit for personal mobility vehicles is going to be set at 25 kilometres per hour.
Meanwhile, although reflective clothes are highly recommended, their use will not be mandatory at the moment.
According to the upcoming law, these vehicles are allowed to use the bike lane and in areas where there is no bike lane, scooter drivers can travel down public roads, but only using the righthand lane.
This news comes after Lorca also recently cracked down on electric scooters following a serious accident in which a 29-year-old was badly injured.
