ARCHIVED - A dozen monkeypox cases now confirmed in the Valencia region
Six of the positives have been detected in Alicante province
A further five monkeypox cases have been confirmed by the Ministry of Health in the Valencia region - three in Alicante and two in Valencia province.
This brings the total number of positive cases detected on the Costa Blanca to 12: half a dozen in Alicante; five in Valencia; and one in the province of Castellón.
Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), with the eradication of smallpox in 1980 and the subsequent cessation of smallpox vaccination, monkeypox has emerged as "the most important orthopoxvirus for public health".
Animal hosts include a range of rodents and non-human primates.
"Human-to-human transmission can result from close contact with respiratory secretions, skin lesions of an infected person or recently contaminated objects," adds WHO.
Monkeypox symptoms typically begin with a fever, headache, muscle aches, and exhaustion 7−14 days after infection and can last for up to 21 days.
