ARCHIVED - Alcantarilla mother dies following liposuction operation in Cartagena
The family of the Murcia woman plan to sue for wrongful death
Sara Gómez, a 39-year-old woman from the Region of Murcia, lost her battle for life on Saturday January 1 after struggling for weeks in the Intensive Care Unit of Santa Lucía hospital, where she was admitted due to complications following a liposuction procedure at the Virgen de la Caridad clinic in Cartagena.
Liposuction is a fairly routine procedure and Sara underwent the surgery to have fat removed from her abdomen on the morning of December 2. However, according to a family spokesperson, medics spent four hours post-op trying to stabilise their patient without success. The hospital’s medical director, quick to point out that the procedure was carried out by an external surgeon, confirmed that the cannula used to extract the fat caused severe perforations in the intestinal area and colon, and Sara began to lose blood.
“Three and a half bags [of blood] were transfused,” explained the director.
After being transferred to Santa Lucía, Sara was diagnosed with various traumas such as fecaloid and biliary peritonitis, multiple intestinal perforations, duodenal perforation, necrosis of the abdominal wall, liver lacerations, retroperitoneal abscess and contained evisceration, injuries “more typical of the result of a brawl with a knife,” according to the family’s lawyer.
Sara’s relatives are planning to sue for reckless homicide and have called on the Ministry of Health to open an investigation into the untimely death of the young mother of two.
More than two hundred people gathered a few weeks ago in Alcantarilla, where the patient was from, to demand justice and send a message of support to Sara, who was still fighting for her life at the time.
The young woman’s body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine where a post-mortem will be carried out.
