ARCHIVED - Barcelona gunman requests to be euthanized before sitting trial
The former security guard gunned down three colleagues and a police officer in Tarragona
A former security guard from Barcelona who barricaded himself, while heavily armed, into a rural Tarragona property after gunning down three former colleagues and a police officer, has requested that he be euthanized before having to face trial for his crimes.
Last December, the 46-year-old Romanian man entered the Securitas offices from which he had recently been let go and opened fire, seriously injuring two other workers and the manager. While fleeing the scene, he shot an officer manning a checkpoint before locking himself into a deserted farmhouse. Police surrounded the property and when the gunman opened fire, a shoot-out ensued.
The man was critically injured and remains in the Terrassa Penitentiary Hospital with an irreversible spinal cord injury.
Now, the prison hospital has informed the court that it is preparing to implement the necessary protocols for the inmate to be euthanized, approved due to his high-dependency situation and the severe pain he is suffering.
While conditions like that of the gunman would usually qualify him for the life-ending procedure in Spain, the injured police officer has submitted a brief to the court requesting that an “urgent order” be issued to the hospital to “cease any activity” related to carrying out euthanasia until a sentence has been handed down.
“A murderer, or presumed murderer in this case, cannot avoid either trial or conviction through euthanasia”, the officer’s lawyer has stressed.
The legal representative maintains that the Terrassa Hospital does not have the authority to decide on the life of a suspect awaiting trial.
The case is ongoing.
