ARCHIVED - Battle over Winter Olympics 2030 continues between Catalonia and Aragon
The Spanish region of Aragón believes it has been “marginalised” by the Olympic Committee
The future of the 2030 Olympic Games in Spain remains uncertain as the co-hosting communities, Catalonia and Aragón, continue to butt heads, despite a preliminary outline of the event being agreed on by both the central government and the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE).
Regardless of the consensus, Aragón plans to present a new proposal this week, claiming that the region is being “marginalised” instead of being considered a 50/50 partner.
The current agreement will see Catalonia host six of the sports: the alpine skiing, snowboarding, freestyle, mountain skiing and ice hockey events, while Aragon has to content itself with just two. The remaining events will be held elsewhere, although the venues have not yet been finalised.
Representatives of the Aragonese government didn’t turn up to sign the proposal on Friday April 1, and the regional president later took to Twitter to express his disappointment at the unfairness of the decision, which he claims shows little equality or “balance” between the two communities.
Days before, he stated that he did not want to “confuse things any further” and refused to come to an agreement unless “there is a balanced distribution of the seats.” He also insisted that the agreement between Catalonia and the COE “contradicts the commitment of the Government of Spain, of Pedro Sánchez, who assured that the candidacy would be balanced and fair.”
"The COE must decide whether to opt for Games that represent Spain on equal terms or that only represent Catalonia," the Aragonese president said on Monday.
