ARCHIVED - Beer prices increase by 20 per cent in the Murcia Region
Bars in Murcia report that a barrel of beer has increased by 20 euros since the Ukraine invasion
Hoteliers in the Region of Murcia have complained of a shortage of cereals on top of the struggles created by higher energy and raw material prices, pushing up the cost of beer by around 20%. According to the regional hospitality association, the shortage of grains arriving from Ukraine since the war began has caused a barrel of beer to increase to around 125 or 130 euros, a rise of around 20 euros.
Barley is the main ingredient used by breweries, along with hops and other grains. The disappearance of supply from Ukraine has caused shortages in other sectors that depend on the grain, such as bakeries and pastry shops, who have already warned that their production capacity has been reduced to a matter of weeks.
Until now, Russia and Ukraine have been known as Europe’s breadbasket but with the conflict waging on, the EU is scrambling to find alternative suppliers in countries like the United States, Canada and Argentina, especially to guarantee livestock feed.
Spain is dangerously deficient in home-grown cereal products, and this shortfall is now having a secondary impact on bars and restaurants in Murcia, who claim that they cannot get their usual supply of meat, since farmers are reducing the number of animals on their farms to try and contain the costs.
Murcia’s own Estrella de Levante has reportedly only increased the cost of its beer by 6%, and this entire cost isn’t actually passed onto customers due to a number of discounts. The brewery manages to keep costs relatively low by obtaining most of its barley and other cereals from the northwest of the Region and Albacete, rather than importing from abroad.
However, the company has acknowledged that while it doesn’t buy from Ukraine right now, “the scarcity of the market can cause changes.”
