ARCHIVED - British woman, 63, dies while scuba diving in Tenerife
The victim is understood to have suffered cardiac arrest while swimming off the coast of Spain
A 63-year-old woman from the UK died on Saturday February 18 while scuba diving in the municipality of Fasnia in eastern Tenerife. It is not yet known whether the victim was resident in Spain or holidaying on the island.
A spokesperson for the regional emergency services said: “We received an alert saying a female scuba diver had been brought out of the sea and needed medical assistance after a dive.”
It’s understood that another man on the dive, who identified himself as a doctor, quickly established that the Briton has suffered cardiac arrest while in the water and began to perform CPR.
“Medical responders continued to try to revive her when they arrived but were unable to do so and she was pronounced dead at the scene,” the emergency response source continued.
While there have been no reports of any suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, the Spanish courts, assisted by the Guardia Civil, have opened an investigation into the cause of the tragedy.
Scuba diving is a high risk sport and accidents are unfortunately frequent. In November, a 60-year-old British man died, also of cardiac arrest, while diving in Playa Flamingo in southern Lanzarote and in August 2022, a man in his 50s became unresponsive while swimming at Calpe’s popular Racó cove in the Marina Alta area of Alicante province.
Lifeguards and rescue workers tried to resuscitate the victim for almost an hour but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The diver is believed to have suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest.
