ARCHIVED - Scuba diver dies at popular cove in Calpe, Alicante
Medics tried to revive the Spanish 57-year-old for 45 minutes to no avail
A 57-year-old has died whilst scuba diving with a group of divers at Calpe's popular Racó cove in the Marina Alta area of Alicante province.
The other members of the diving group were alarmed when the deceased became unresponsive on Monday afternoon, August 8, and alerted lifeguards who immediately pulled the unconscious diver out of the water.
The lifeguards carried out resuscitation manoeuvres for around 15 minutes before a SAMU ambulance arrived and a doctor and medics took over.
For a further 30 minutes they continued with advanced resuscitation techniques, but there was no response and they were unable to recover the victim's vital signs.
A post mortem will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death, but according to emergency sources, the diver is believed to have suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest.
Earlier the same day, just after 9am, Salvamento Marítimo rescued 13 immigrants on a boat adrift off Calpe coast.
The boat was spotted by the Helimer 223 rescue heliccopter some distance from the shore and those aboard were reportedly making desperate gestures for help.
The Salvamar Diphda boat picked up all 13 passengers and took them to the Alicante Port where Red Cross medical staff carried out PCR tests and the relevant medical examinations.
Red Cross sources confirmed the immigrants are males, of Algerian nationality and of legal age. Two of them were transferred to the General Hospital of Alicante and one was treated in the port for a minor burn.
