ARCHIVED - Brussels pushes for mandatory vaccinations across Europe
Many communities in Spain now require Covid passports to access bars and restaurants
The controversial issue of mandatory Covid vaccinations has been a hot topic for several months and now it appears that the measure may become a reality as the president of the European Commission has insisted that “a common approach” must at the very least be debated among the 27 member states. Responding to the emergence of the Omicron variant and surging coronavirus cases across Europe, Ursula von der Leyen wants to explore “how we can encourage and potentially think about mandatory vaccination within the European Union".
The idea of mandatory jabs, while contentious, is nothing new, and Austria has already announced that compulsory vaccinations will come into force in February 2022. Failure to comply with the measure will lead to fines of up to 7,200 euros. Greece plans to introduce mandatory inoculations on all those over the age of 60 while in Italy, people must have a Covid passport in order to go to work.
Of course, Spain is no great stranger to the notion, and many communities now require proof of vaccinations, a negative test, or having overcome the virus to enter enclosed spaces such as bars and restaurants.
For its part, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has advocated against “the generalised closures” experienced in 2020 but has warned of the “urgent need” to take preventative measures, such as pushing for those who remain unvaccinated to be inoculated against Covid as soon as possible.
The Commission has also proposed that the existing Covid passports expire after nine months if a booster vaccine is not received. The third dose (or second in the case of Janssen) is already being administered in many countries in Europe, including Spain.
