ARCHIVED - Budget Imserso trips for pensioners return to Murcia
The low-cost travel campaign will resume in the Region of Murcia on December 14
After months of uncertainty about whether the low-cost winter trips for older people would actually go ahead this year, the Institute for the Elderly and Social Services has announced that customers in the Region of Murcia will be able to book Imserso trips from their travel agencies from December 14.
While the holidays usually begin in October, officials have confirmed that hotels will now receive their first guests in January.
The Imserso trips are designed to offer budget travel and accommodation to elderly people during the off-peak winter months. The scheme is extremely popular as not only does it provide a cheap holiday to those on a fixed income, it also provides a well-needed boost to bars, restaurants, hotels and tour operators during the otherwise quiet season.
The Region of Murcia has 21,877 places assigned for the 2021-2022 season, a figure lower than the 25,300 it reached before the pandemic. The delay in starting the program was caused by disagreements over the packages on offer and has resulted in establishments losing out on the business during the third quarter of the year, around a third of the overall campaign.
Prior to December 14, more than 3.5 million people who have already applied for Imserso trips will receive letters indicating the date and destination of their holiday, assuming no appeals are filed to the Central Administrative Court before November 25, a delay which the Minister for Tourism doesn’t currently foresee.
On the Costa Cálida, there are five four-star hotels which traditionally offer rooms for the Imserso program, but the regional minister, Marcos Ortuño, has estimated that hotels and spas in the Murcia have already lost out on around 10 million euros due to the delay in launching the much-needed campaign.
