ARCHIVED - Camping fever hits Spain
Campsites across Spain expect to welcome 5 million visitors this summer
With the cost of living skyrocketing to the highest level in 37 years due to ever-increasing electricity and natural gas costs, holidaymakers are understandably looking for a cheaper alternative this summer that will allow them to travel Spain on a budget.
Camping has always been popular in Spain thanks to the pleasant weather and idyllic beach-side and mountain sites, but this year, bookings are already exceeding all expectations.
According to forecasts by the Spanish Camping Federation (FEEC), the sector is expected to break records in June, July and August by welcoming more than 5 million visitors and catering for 23 million overnight stays. Average occupancy could also exceed 90% across the country, with dozens of campsites already completely booked out between July 15 and August 15.
"We are facing a historic summer, the result of the work and effort of an entire sector that has opened its doors to thousands of Spanish families and who have been pleasantly surprised by the high level of our establishments," Ana Beriaín, president of the FEEC, said.
"It is clear that we are already a very important part of the national and international offer of tourism in Spain. But we want to continue demonstrating the potential that we have throughout the year, not only during the holiday periods," she added.
Business is booming in Andalucía, Murcia and Barcelona
According to the federation, campsites in Andalucía, the Region of Murcia and Barcelona are expected to register a higher than average occupancy, with bookings likely to exceed 95%.
In the north of Spain, always depending on the weather which has been very unsettled of late, campsites in Galicia, Cantabria, Asturias and the Basque Country should exceed 90% occupancy.
"These good data are based on the national camper who already stood out in a notable way last summer and on the recovery of foreign tourists, now without restrictions or limitations of any kind," the organisation pointed out.
