ARCHIVED - Cartagena tribute to migrants who died at sea
Last year, 6,771 people disappeared in the Mediterranean while trying to cross illegally
Dozens of people gathered in the port of Cartagena yesterday, Sunday February 6, to pay tribute to the 6,771 migrants who died in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to reach Spain last year.
Illegal migration in unregulated boats from the coast of Africa, across the Mediterranean and into Spain is a common occurrence, with thousands of people risking their lives each year for the chance of a better life in Europe. Already in 2022, there have been more illegal arrivals on Spanish shores since January 2019.
In addition to the 6,771 people officially missing in the Mediterranean, there are many more who disappeared on other migratory routes in the Canary Islands route and to the United States in 2021.
Yesterday’s homage included the ceremonial throwing of flowers into the sea in memory of the undocumented missing and deceased.
