ARCHIVED - Covid test scrapped for vaccinated travellers from Spain to Ireland
Passengers from Spain who are double jabbed will not have to undertake a test to enter Ireland
Taoiseach Micheal Martin has confirmed that fully vaccinated passengers travelling from Spain and the rest of Europe will no longer require a negative Covid test to enter Ireland.
The measure was originally introduced in December to contain the Omicron variant, but since experts agree that the variant is now responsible for the vast majority of Irish coronavirus cases, the restriction will be scrapped.
Speaking following a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning, January 5, Mr Martin said: "A decision has been taken in relation to travel in terms of removing the restriction that had been in place because of Omicron, in terms of the requirement of an antigen and PCR test, that will no longer be necessary.
"Basically, because Omicron now constitutes for 96 per cent of all cases in the country".
With the change, passengers will still have to download a digital certificate prior to travelling to Ireland to prove that they have either been double vaccinated or have recovered from coronavirus.
All unvaccinated travellers will still have to present a negative Covid test.
The new rule change was agreed by ministers this morning after advice was given by Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan.
Depending on the agreement reached by Cabinet, the new rules could come into play as soon as Thursday January 6 but an exact date still needs to be confirmed.
