ARCHIVED - DGT launches seatbelt campaign in Andalusia
Increased checkpoints will be set up throughout Andalucía to ensure the correct use of safety restraints
As of Monday April 4, the Guardia Civil throughout Andalucía is increasing the number of checkpoints as part of a new DGT campaign to ensure the proper use of seatbelts and child restraint systems (CRS) in the region. All vehicles, including cars, taxis, buses and freight transport will be subject to the controls which will check that seatbelts are worn correctly and that children are travelling with restraints appropriate to their weight and size.
The new Traffic Law came into force in Spain on March 21 and under the regulations, failure to use a seatbelt or child restraint correctly will result in the loss of 4 points from your driving licence.
It’s not just police controls drivers need to be aware of; the DGT frequently uses cameras and helicopter surveillance which can tell how many occupants are in a vehicle and whether they are all wearing seatbelts.
Minors with a height equal to or less than 135 centimetres must always sit in the back seat in addition to having the correct CRS for their size, except when the vehicle does not have rear seats, all the rear seats are already occupied by smaller children, or when it is not possible to install all the CRS on said seats.
If they occupy the front seats and the car has an airbag, youngsters can only use rear-facing restraint systems if the airbag has been deactivated.
During a similar campaign between March 8 and 14 last year, Traffic officers stopped 48,808 vehicles and found that 770 adults and 48 minors were travelling without any type of safety restraint. The majority of the checked vehicles were passenger cars (81.7%), although taxis (2.4%), buses (1.9%) and freight transport (14%) were also checked.
Although surveillance was carried out 24 hours a day, the most infractions (98%) were recorded between 6am and 10pm.
