ARCHIVED - EU proposes second Brexit referendum
Europe wants another vote to confirm Britons’ “final decision”
Following talks on February 17, the European Parliament has proposed a second referendum on Brexit, claiming that Britons lacked all the necessary information on the real implications of leaving the bloc before voting in 2016.
In a report commissioned by the EU Parliament’s Committee on Constitutional Affairs this week, MEPs have suggested that another referendum would provide a “demographic safeguard” on the final decision of the UK to leave the European Union.
The report stressed that another vote is necessary, “given the nature of the decision to leave the Union and its fundamental impacts on citizens of the departing Member State,” and that the powers that be should ensure that “all possible steps” are taken “during this process to avoid disinformation, foreign interference and funding irregularities.”

London and Brussels are still battling it out over the Northern Ireland Protocol, with Unionists claiming the post-Brexit arrangements are damaging relations with Britain. In an effort to prevent a hard border, Northern Ireland is still essentially part of the EU’s single market, but this has resulted in lengthy checks on goods crossing the Irish Sea from the UK.
However, recent data published by the Irish Central Statistics Office (CSO) shows that imports to Southern Ireland have actually increased by 65% between 2020 and 2021, “very welcome news”, according to Fine Gael TD Neale Richmond.
“The Protocol is not only protecting Northern Ireland from the worst of Brexit, economically, but it also offers far greater potential than many would have expected,” Mr Richmond added.
