ARCHIVED - First case of monkeypox confirmed in Region of Murcia
The male patient is being treated at a hospital in Cartagena
The Ministry of Health has confirmed on Tuesday June 14 the first definite case of monkeypox in the Region of Murcia. The results were confirmed after samples were analysed by the National Centre for Microbiology in Madrid.
The patient is a man aged between 45 and 49 years who was just passing through Murcia when he developed symptoms. He was initially treated at the Santa Lucia Hospital in Cartagena but has since left the Region and is isolating in a different autonomous community.
The regional health authorities claim the man contracted monkeypox while on a trip to Europe and had no close contacts while visiting Murcia.
A little over a month since the virus was first detected in Spain, the country has tested samples of more than 500 suspected cases of monkeypox and so far, 253 have tested positive. Just a few days ago, a second patient was diagnosed in Alicante, bringing the total number of infections in the Valencian Community up to three.
More than 700 cases of monkeypox have been diagnosed across Europe.

Monkeypox vaccinations
The European Commission announced this week that it has signed a contract with the Danish pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic to purchase 109,090 monkeypox vaccines, which will be distributed throughout the European Union.
“With the agreement signed today, we ensure that member states will have access to much-needed vaccines to protect people exposed to monkeypox. This is a tangible demonstration of our strengthened ability to respond rapidly to health crises," said the Commissioner for Health, Stella Kyriakides.
In addition to the EC jabs, several member states, including Spain, have already begun importing the monkeypox vaccines to be administered to the most serious cases.
