ARCHIVED - Heavy rainfall will do little to alleviate drought in southwest Spain
Much of Spain set to experience “the most unstable episode of the year”
Spain has experienced an unseasonably balmy winter and a noticeable absence of heavy rain has seen the reservoirs dry up to just 45% of their full capacity. The weather is wreaking havoc on agriculture and livestock, particularly in the southern part of the country, which will need several torrential downpours to right the situation.
The early February forecasts weren’t very encouraging, as the anticyclonic weather experienced throughout January has so far brought bright, settled days, if some frosty nights. But meteorologists are predicting that farmers’ fortunes are set to change for the better later this week, as a trough of low pressure looks likely to cause the “most unstable episode” so far this year.
If the predictions prove accurate, from Wednesday February 9 rain should sweep in from east to west, but heavy showers are unlikely to hit the Canary Islands or the peninsular southwest, the areas which need it the most. In any case, Samuel Biener, an expert at Meteored, doubts the country will see any major squalls.
“It would take a few storms of this type to fix the deficit in Catalonia and the peninsular southwest,” he explained.
Although another front could arrive through Galicia on Sunday after the episode of low pressure, “it seems that this is only going to be an interlude because the anticyclonic situation will return.”
The most likely scenario is that the settled weather will have returned to most of Spain by the time this week draws to a close, and although the snow level is dropping steadily, this will still be “very insufficient” to solve the drought crisis.
During the weekend, the trough of low pressure will result in a considerable drop in temperature, with rain and some snowfall that advance as far as the Balearic Islands. Although it will be the “most unstable episode” of 2022, general and abundant rainfall is not expected and the experts have ruled out the appearance of a DANA.
