ARCHIVED - Reservoirs across Spain sink to 45 per cent of capacity
Farmers across Spain fear that the drought will destroy their harvest
With several more dry and sunny days ahead, and temperatures exceeding their normal values for this time of year all across Spain, the drought situation is reaching crisis point well before the real heat of the summer months hits.
According to government sources, the overall Spanish water reserve is in dire straits, with reservoirs now at just 44.8% of their capacity. This is a substantial 8% lower than last year and 14 points lower than the average for this time period over the last decade.
Andalucía has been hardest hit, and the Guadalquivir river, which is now at only 28.6% of its capacity, has been issued with several drought warnings over the last few months. This is followed by Guadalete-Barbate, Guadiana and the Andalucían Mediterranean Basin.
The Region of Murcia hasn’t escaped, with the Segura river at just 35.3%, and the reservoir in the Basque Country is the only one that has a water reserve above 90%.
While holidaymakers rejoice at the clear skies and balmy temperatures, the consequences of this drought are being keenly felt by the agricultural sector, particularly for farmers in the south and east of Spain, who worry that the spring temperatures will destroy their upcoming harvest.
