ARCHIVED - Huge forest fire brought under control in Mazarron
The wildfire raged through the Sierra de la Perdiz de Mazarrón at the weekend
Six fire crews and four helicopters took almost seven hours to bring a forest fire in the Sierra de la Perdiz de Mazarrón under control at the weekend, but not before it had destroyed hectares of land and a greenhouse.
As Murcia sweltered in the latter effects of a heatwave on Friday June 17, temperatures rose to dangerous levels, and a huge bushfire broke out just before 5.30pm. Flames and black smoke were clearly visible from quite some distance.
Forestry firefighting units from Mazarrón and Alhama de Murcia regional consortium together with fire and rescue helicopters from Zarzadilla, Sierra de la Pila and Alcantarilla were drafted in to tackle the flames which were eventually brought under control at 12.10am on Saturday June 18.
Although the flames had been extinguished, fire crews remained in the moutain rain for much of the weekend to douse and safeguard the area and ensure there were no secondary outbreaks. The exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
