ARCHIVED - Hunters in Spain want their dogs excluded from animal protection laws
The Hunting Federation in Spain insists that their dogs are not companion animals
The future Law for the Protection and Rights of Animals in Spain was detailed by the government back in October, but officials appear to be dragging their feet in putting the legislation into practice. The new law will include controversial measures such as making dog owners take a course, prohibiting the sale of companion animals in pet stores and banning euthanasia for healthy dogs.
The latest road block has been put forward by the Ministry of Agriculture, who wants the law to differentiate between hunting dogs and family pets. Animal rights activists are pushing for the legislation to provide equal protection for all dogs.
The Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 plans to present a draft of the decree on Tuesday November 30, and it will include a ban on certain practices such as cockfighting and pigeon shooting, as well as protecting feral cat colonies, allowing the breeding of animals only by authorised persons and prohibiting the raising of animals that are not indigenous to Spain, such as the American mink, which is used in fur farming. In addition, circuses using wild animals for entertainment will no longer be allowed.
Social Rights sources have accused the government of delaying the legislation because they are “scared” of the reaction of hunters, who shouldn’t be negatively affected by the new law once they do not mistreat their animals, as the decree simply “addresses the animal abuse” rather than passing any comment on the practice of hunting itself.
The Royal Spanish Hunting Federation has vehemently opposed the law, claiming that it places animals “above human beings” and infringes on individual rights. Moreover, the president of the association, Manuel Gallardo, has accused the legislative draft of actually promoting animal abuse, as it calls on male and female companion animals to be neutered or spayed.
