ARCHIVED - Imserso budget trips for pensioners in Spain: where you can go and how to apply
This year, pensioners will be able to choose from destinations in 52 provinces in Spain
Imserso trips are back. The government has just approved the 2023-2024 budget travel scheme for pensioners which this year had added 70,000 more places to accommodate a total of 900,000 people.
The initiative offers cheap vacations during the off-peak season from October to June, and the trips are open to resident pensioners of any nationality, as well as their spouses, partners and children with disabilities.
Requirements to qualify for the Imserso Tourism Programme in Spain
Persons residing in Spain who meet any of the following 4 requirements may apply for the Imserso travel scheme for retirees:
- Be a retired pensioner within the Spanish Social Security system.
- Be a widow/widower pensioner of 55 years of age or more in the Spanish Social Security system.
- Be a pensioner for other concepts of the Spanish Social Security system or a recipient of unemployment benefits or subsidies, aged 60 or older.
- Be an insured or beneficiary of the Spanish Social Security System, of 65 years of age or older.
What travel destinations are available via Imserso in 2023-24?
This season, holidaymakers will be able to choose from destinations in 52 Spanish provinces and 10 cultural attractions in Albacete, Almería, Ávila, Cáceres, Castellón, Girona, Lleida, Tenerife and Toledo, and 19 new nature routes, including Sierra Nevada, the natural park of Las Médulas, the natural park of Tablas de Daimiel, the Ribeira Sacra and the Leitzarán Valley, have been added to the itinerary.
In addition, more than 1,000 places will be reserved for destinations with literary, musical, theatrical or gastronomic cultural themes in areas of special cultural interest in Spain.
After yet another successful season last year, organisers have taken on board the suggestions of participants to make some significant changes. To increase comfort, pensioners will have the option of travelling via AVE this year rather than undertaking long coach journeys, and more single rooms have been made available for independent travellers.
And to promote active ageing, The Social Tourism Programme has confirmed that pensioners will be able to book a trip anywhere in Spain, regardless of where they are resident.
While the full price of the trips hasn’t been released yet, the Imserso initiative is always a great value way for older people to travel, since 22% of the cost is covered by the government. The price also depends on several factors such as the date of the holiday and the destination.
