ARCHIVED - More than half of the beaches in Alicante province will be smoke-free this summer
Smoking is now banned on 44 of the Alicante's 81 beaches
Last month, Javea Town Hall joined a growing network of local authorities on the Costa Blanca that have taken the decision to stamp out smoking on beaches and create totally smoke-free coastal areas.
In fact, this summer a total of 44 of Alicante province's 81 beaches will be "tobacco-free spaces" and listed in the region's 'Xarxa de Platges Sense Fum', a network any council that totally or partially limits smoking in public areas can join.
Cigarette butts account for an estimated 30% of discarded waste along coastlines and most data suggests they take between 18 months and 10 years to decompose, depending on weather conditions.
In addition to Javea, here's a list of the province's smoke-free beaches this summer:
El Campello has 17 beaches where lighting up is banned: Playa de Muchavista, Playa Punta del Riu, Playa Carrer la Mar, La Illeta dels Banyets, Playa de l'Almadrava, Cala del Llop Marí, Playa de l'Amerador, Cala Nostra, Cala del Morro Blanc, Cala d'Enmig, Cala Piteres, Playa Barranc d'Aigües, Playa de la Lloma de Reixes, Cala Baeza, Cala Lanuza, Cala de les Palmeretes and Cala Carritxal.
In Villajoyosa, there are 13: Playa Carritxal, Playa Xarco, Playa La Caleta, Playa l'Esparralló, Playa Bol Nou, Playa Paradís, Playa Punte del Moro, Playa Centro, Playa Varadero, Playa Estudiantes, Playa Tio Roig, Playa Torres and Playa Racó Conill).
There are six in Alicante: Playa San Juan, Playa Almadraba, Playa Albufereta, Playa Postiguet, Playa Urbanova and Playa Tabarca.
Elche aso has six: Carabassí Beach, L'Altet Beach, Arenals del Sol Beach, El Pinet Beach, La Marina Beach and Pesqueres-El Reboll Beach.
Denia has one: Marge Roig Beach.
A recent study carried out by the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (semFYC) found that, of the 6,302 people surveyed, 85.5% are in favour of banning smoking on bar and restaurant terraces.
